What Does Sprinkler System Fall Winterization Include?

Every winterization clears water out of the system so nothing freezes and cracks. We also flag and fix problems before they sit all winter, because our trucks carry valves, heads, fittings and backflow parts.

Winterization steps on every system

  • Water supply shut-off: main or stop-and-waste valve closed and the supply line drained.

  • Compressed air blowout: each zone cleared with regulated air, kept within the pipe's pressure rating, until heads spray mist only.

  • Backflow protection: backflow drained, test cocks set half-open and ball valves positioned to prevent freeze cracks.

  • Drain valve check: manual drains opened and auto drains confirmed working.

  • Controller set for winter: switched to off or rain mode so programs are saved for spring.

Repairs we catch before winter

  • Broken sprinkler heads: cracked bodies, stuck rotors and sheared risers that leak or won't seal.

  • Leaks: split lateral lines, cracked fittings and swing joints found while zones are charged.

  • Valve failures: weeping valves, torn diaphragms and failed solenoids that trap water in the line.

  • Controller and timer issues: dead displays, bad station wiring and backup battery replacement.

  • Low water pressure: weak zones that point to a leak, clog or failing valve.

  • Zone not turning on: open solenoid wire, stuck valve or failed controller station, which can't be blown out until fixed.

  • Mainline breaks: pressurized line ruptures and damaged backflow preventers.

Signs You Need Fall Winterization Service

How do I know if my sprinkler system needs to be winterized? If any of these apply, book before the first hard freeze.

Water left in the lines and backflow can freeze and crack after a single hard night.

Overnight lows are dropping toward freezing

Shutting off the main leaves water sitting in pipes, valves and heads. It needs to be blown out.

You've only shut off the water

Cracked pipe or a split backflow usually means the system wasn't fully cleared the fall before.

You had freeze damage last spring

Above-ground backflows are the first part to freeze. They need draining and correct valve positions.

The backflow is exposed above ground

A stuck or weeping valve can hold water in the line through winter. Fix it before the blowout.

A zone leaks or won't shut off

Shop compressors can't move enough air to clear a full zone and can overheat or under-clear the line.

You don't own a large air compressor
